Withdrawal from ECOWAS: Burkina Faso sends ‘formal notification’

Ouagadougou: Burkina Faso sent an official notification to ECOWAS this Monday, confirming its joint decision, taken yesterday with Mali and Niger, to leave the sub-regional institution without delay.

On January 28, 2024, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger announced in the middle of the day on their public televisions their immediate withdrawal from ECOWAS, denouncing in particular its distance from the initial ideals, its unjust sanctions against their people and its subjugation to foreigners powers.

A few hours later, ECOWAS indicated that it had not received formal notifications and said it was ‘determined to find a negotiated solution to the political impasse’ affecting these military-led countries.

This Monday, the AIB learned from reliable sources that Burkina Faso sent an official notification to ECOWAS to confirm its withdrawal.

As a reminder, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger created the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) in September 2023 to jointly defend their strategic interests, at a time when ECOWAS wanted
to attack Niger to reinstall President Mohamed Bazoum who had just been overthrown by General Abdourahamane Tiani.
