Ouagadougou: The constitutional revision project aimed at reducing the length of the presidential term in Togo to less than five years, will promote a more fluid political alternation and a more open electoral competition, estimates analyst Essozimna Abalo.

‘Reducing the duration of presidential mandates to less than five years (…)

would not only increase the frequency of popular expression through the ballot box but also strengthen the principle of responsibility and accountability of elected officials towards the people Togolese,’ writes Togolese analyst Essozimna Abalo in a long reflection.

According to him, this orientation towards reduced presidential mandates reflects a desire to prevent governance crises by promoting more fluid political alternation and more open electoral competition.

In addition, Essozimna Abalo also believes that this reduction will also encourage presidents to focus their efforts on concrete and measurable achievements in a shorter time frame.

‘This potential reduction in the
length of the presidential mandate highlights Togo’s commitment to a more dynamic and inclusive democracy, where closer electoral cycles can stimulate increased civic participation and reinforced citizen vigilance,’ said Mr. Abalo.

According to the analyst, the project to shorten the duration of presidential mandates in Togo to less than five years is carried by a group of independent deputies, in synergy with certain members of the ruling party.
