Thomas Sankara Mausoleum: Government satisfied with level of physical execution of works

Ouagadougou, September 17, 2024 (AIB) – A government delegation said on Tuesday it was satisfied with the 27% physical completion of the construction site of the mausoleum of Captain Thomas Sankara and his companions in misfortune.

“What we have seen here this morning at the Thomas Sankara memorial is satisfactory, because with nearly 40% of the time consumed, the physical execution of the work amounts to approximately 27%,” declared the Minister of State, government spokesperson, Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo.

According to the minister, there is hope that the deadline of the end of December 2024 will be met, because the 27% represents the most difficult part of the monument.

According to him, the Thomas Sankara mausoleum, which is the first stage of the architectural ensemble of the Thomas Sankara memorial, will be built with local materials to pay tribute to Captain Thomas Sankara and his 12 companions in misfortune assa
ssinated on October 15, 1987.

“We want this mausoleum to be a truly inspiring place, a place that reflects Thomas Sankara’s dream for Burkina Faso,” added Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo.

According to architect Francis Kéré, all the foundations and excavations have been completed, the toilets are finished and the machinery is estimated at 15%.

According to the architect, the entire monument will be built with compressed earth blocks (CEB) and clad on the outside with laterite blocks, in accordance with Sankara’s philosophy that houses built with earth are a good solution for the Sahel.

In addition to the mausoleum, the architect specifies that there will be an esplanade bordered by walls, that is to say, retention walls made of crushed granite.

Looking ahead, Francis Kéré wants to convince the government to build the Thomas Sankara tower, 87 stories high, from the top of which one can see the entire city of Ouagadougou.
