Protection of the ozone layer: The Ministry of the Environment plans a local monitoring campaign

The Ministry of the Environment has planned a local campaign to monitor companies and/or structures importing and marketing refrigerants and the equipment containing them, on the occasion of the 37th International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer.

“To mark the highlight of the 37th day in Burkina Faso, my department will lead a local campaign to control companies and/or structures importing and marketing refrigerants and the equipment containing them,” declared the Minister in charge of the Environment, Roger Baro.

Mr. Baro also indicated that refrigeration and air conditioning maintenance workshops will be organized by the Burkinabe government during which Ouagadougou will be rewarded.

He spoke on Tuesday, on the occasion of the 37th International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer under the theme: “Montreal Protocol: Advancing Climate Action.”

For him, the choice of the theme is justified by the persistence of the use of substances which deplete the ozone layer including hydrofluoroca
rbon gases (HFCs) and the harmful effects of the emissions of these gases on the global action undertaken in favour of the climate.

The minister affirmed that Burkina Faso has remained steadfast in its commitment to carrying out favorable political and institutional reforms and developing concrete initiatives on the ground.

Roger Baro also assured that the country has equipped itself with a Laboratory for Analysis of Environmental Quality and has set up the management of the National Ozone Office (BNO).

According to him, his main mission is to ensure the technical execution of the missions of the general directorate for environmental preservation in terms of coordination and monitoring of the Vienna Convention and its Montreal Protocol.

“An open day of the National Ozone Office and the control of the quality of vehicle refrigerants and awareness raising among users will also be carried out,” he said.

As a reminder, the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer (IDOP) is celebrated on Sept
ember 16 of each year by the international community.
