Niamey’s Monteuil Square was named Thomas Sankara Square on Tuesday by the Nigerien authorities during a naming ceremony for several boulevards, avenues, streets and squares in the city of Niamey.

Monteuil Square, opposite the central police station in Niamey, becomes Place Capitaine Thomas Sankara, former president of Burkina Faso, during a ceremony presided over by the Minister of Youth, Culture, Arts and Sports, Colonel Major Abdourahamane Amadou.

According to the minister, this baptism aims to pay tribute to Captain Sankara, “an African Che Guevara whose memory remains alive among young Burkinabe but also throughout Africa.”

This consecration comes on the day of the commemoration of the 37th anniversary of the assassination of the father of the Burkinabe Revolution. On October 15, 1987, a commando killed Captain Thomas Sankara and 12 of his companions in Ouagadougou.

A six-month trial, which began in October 2021, sentenced former President Blaise Compaoré, General Gilbert Diendiéré and Hyacinthe Kaf
ando to life imprisonment.

Note that during the same ceremony, the Francophonie square was also named the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) square.
