Ouagadougou: The Autonomous Union of Magistrates of Niger (SAMAN) launched this Wednesday a strike notice from July 1 to 3, 2024 in Niger, in order to defend the independence of the judiciary and to protest against ‘ intrusion’ of the executive power.
According to the strike notice signed this Wednesday, this strike across the entire Nigerien territory does not provide for any ‘minimum service’. It comes after the lifting of police custody decided by the military hierarchy for two police officers accused of violence and assault against a magistrate of the Tillabéry high court, on June 10, 2024.
Likewise, the magistrates denounced the ‘intolerable interference’ of a prefect in an investigation ordered by the public prosecutor in connection with a murder case committed in May 2024.
The executive office of the union nevertheless expressed its availability to dialogue and regrets that its efforts for a ‘happy and peaceful outcome’ are unsuccessful.
Like Burkina Faso and Mali, Niger is engaged in a fight again
st terrorism which leads the authorities to take strong measures which can reduce individual and corporate freedoms.
