The State Court of Niger, the highest court in the country, ordered this Friday the lifting of the immunity of the former president of the Niger Republic, Mohamed Bazoum, reports Nigerian Press Agency.

At its public hearing on June 14, 2024, the state court ordered the lifting of Mohamed Bazoum’s immunity, responding favorably to the request of the government commissioner at the military court.

From now on, the former president will be able to respond before the courts of his country to the accusations of ‘conspiracy aimed at undermining the authority or security of the State’ which weigh against him because of his positions and actions, in the first days of his overthrow, for a military intervention to restore him to his functions.

Mohamed Bazoum, overthrown by the army on July 26, 2023, still remains in the hands of the military. His son, Salem Bazoum, kept with his father, has benefited from provisional release since January 2024.
