A validation workshop held to develop a regional directory

Fada N’Gourma (AIB)-The High Commissioner of the Gourma province, Silas Nacanabo, chaired, on October 21, 2024 in Fada N’Gourma, the work of the regional workshop for the examination and validation of surnames and toponyms of the Eastern region.

In November 2023, the Prime Minister, in accordance with his general policy statement before the Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT), instructed the Minister in charge of Culture to undertake initiatives to develop a national directory of national toponyms and surnames, considered essential characteristics of our intangible heritage.

It is in this same spirit that the vital forces of the Eastern region under the aegis of the regional directorate in charge of Eastern Culture, organized, on October 21, 2024 in Fada N’Gourma, a workshop for the examination and validation of surnames and toponyms, under the chairmanship of the high commissioner of the Gourma province, Silas Nacanabo.

According to the regi
onal director of Culture of the East, Talata Marcelline Kaboré, 66 surnames and 31 toponyms will be examined for validation with the resource persons of the locality who are among others, the notables and the elderly.

“This workshop aims to clarify these surnames and toponyms before validation in order to avoid any ambiguity,” said Ms. Kaboré.

The Minister of the King of Gulmu, Oyienbiga Oyenboiro, appreciated this government’s desire to develop a national directory of place names and surnames.

“This is what we were missing and what justifies the fact that today we are in a world without a soul where we see most people walking without knowing where they are going or where they come from,” he said.

The Minister of the King of Gulmu added that one day is not enough for a real validation of the terms collected, given the interest of the work.

Mrs. Pobindo Couldiaty, who came from Diapaga, added that the collection of these surnames and place names will allow them to know many things.

As proof, she added, s
he followed with interest the explanation of certain surnames.

The High Commissioner of Gourma, Silas Nacanabo, stressed that the present meeting aims to request further contributions for the enrichment of the information already collected, before wishing for fruitful exchanges.
