Gourma: Livestock exporters and importers protest against tax increases (Updated)

Fada N’Gourma Livestock exporters and importers boycotted the Fada N’Gourma livestock market this Sunday to protest against the increase in the market access tax which would have been passed from 1,000 to 2,600 FCFA for large ruminants.

In order to broaden the tax base, the special municipal delegation of Fada N’Gourma during its first extraordinary session held on October 18, 2023, adopted a deliberation instituting various taxes at the level of the livestock market in the city of Yendabili.

Obviously this deliberation which sets the new rates on a legal basis for the collection of taxes on the livestock market place of Fada N’Gourma, did not meet with the consent of livestock exporters and importers.

So to demonstrate their dissatisfaction, this Sunday, November 5, 2023, the day of the livestock market, these actors withdraw from the usual place of exchange.

Thus, the head of livestock loading of Fada N’Gourma, Aboubakar Thiombiano, stressed that, as soon as they were informed of the municipal deliberation establishing the new rates for the collection of taxes, they took steps with the municipal authorities so that they re -examines the decision in light of the difficult context.

These efforts remained in vain, he assured. According to Mr. Thiombiano, it was yesterday Saturday that he learned that the deliberation of October 18, 2023 will be applied this Sunday.

“We are not against this decision. We believe that this is not the right time. Many displaced people come to sell their livestock in order to meet the needs of their families. Asking even more taxes from this outspoken population, we believe it is too much,” suggested Aboubacar Thiombiano.

Same story for livestock market broker Issouf Yonli.

He said that in the past, the tax levied on a large ruminant was one thousand CFA francs.

“Today, the same tax costs us two thousand six hundred (2,600) CFA francs even though our work has not been easy at all lately,” added Mr. Yonli.

But according to a press release published on November 3, 2023 by the special delegation, the parking and boarding fees for large ruminants is 1000 FCFA or 500 FCFA per act.

As a reminder, the new collection tax rates on the Fada N’Gourma livestock market concern large ruminants (cattle), small ruminants, pigs and poultry.
