Gaoua/Maracana Veterans: Chelsea FC wins the first edition

The first edition of the Maracana Veterans Tournament, reserved for former footballers aged 35 and over, reached its apotheosis on Saturday, October 19, 2024 on the RTB field in Gaoua. In the final, Chelsea FC won against the Doyens team.

The Maracana Veterans Tournament, reserved for former footballers aged 35 and over, delivered its verdict on Saturday, October 19, 2024 in Gaoua. The final pitted Chelsea FC against the Doyens team.

In this match, played in two halves of twenty minutes, the two teams offered a quality spectacle, with offensive actions which did not however allow them to find the back of the net, with the exception of a winning header from Siaka Barro in the 15th minute, thus giving the advantage to Chelsea FC.

In the second half, the Doyens team raised their level of play, dominating at times, but failed to equalise before the final whistle.

After an intense final against the Doyens, Chelsea FC won 1-0, thus winning the first edition of this competition which brought together eight tea
ms.

The finalists were rewarded with medals, gadgets and a financial bonus.

The tournament promoter, Boubacar Tarnagda, was delighted with the success of this first edition.

“The idea was born from the desire to create a framework for expression for former footballers, key players in the life of clubs in the past. They must continue to participate in the animation of sporting life. The matches took place in a good mood and that was our main objective,” he said.

For his part, the guest of honor, the former footballer and former coach of Bafuji FC of Gaoua, Dieudonné Da, welcomed the initiative.

According to him, it is an excellent thing that former footballers meet up to share friendly moments and reminisce about their common passion: football.

This is why he encouraged this dynamic, which not only promotes physical and mental health, but also cohesion between those involved in sport.

The tournament benefited from various forms of support. Mahamadi Ouédraogo, representing the event’s partner, said he wa
s pleased to have associated his company’s image with this tournament.

“We witnessed a great final. These former players contribute to the influence of football and sport in general. We will continue to support them as much as we can,” he stressed.
