Educational school gardens coming soon to the Sahel region

The Environment and Local Development Association (EDEL) organized, on Saturday, October 12, 2024 in Dori, a public conference to officially launch its environmental education program, in the presence of an audience of pupils, students, education stakeholders and partners, members of associations and opinion leaders.

This activity was placed under the theme ‘Environmental education and citizen participation of communities in sustainable development projects of the Essakane mine’.

According to the president of the EDEL association, Mr. Ibrahim Maïga, this initiative is part of the implementation of the 2024-2025 action plan of his structure and marks a key step in regional efforts to integrate environmental issues into sustainable development projects.

Mr. Maïga added that with the partnership of IAMGOLD Essakane SA, his association will create school gardens that will serve as educational spaces where children will learn the importance of preserving the environment while acquiring practical skills in agri
culture.

For the representative of the General Manager of IAMGOLD Essakane SA, Mr. Issouf Mohamed Dicko, this partnership will allow the implementation of activities related to environmental education in the Sahel region and will bring positive and lasting changes to local communities.

This initiative will contribute to training citizens capable of meeting environmental challenges with endogenous, adapted, sustainable solutions that respect the ecosystem balance, he said.

The Governor of the Sahel region, Lieutenant Colonel Fabien Rodolphe Sorgho, welcomed the implementation of this program in some pilot municipalities in the region.

‘We have the responsibility to ensure that the objectives of this collaboration are achieved and that the results are sustainable for the development of our region,’ he said.

The regional directors in charge of basic education, Mr. Elhadji Boubacar, and of the environment of the Sahel, Lieutenant-Colonel Dramane Fogo, as well as the provincial director of basic education of
Oudalan, Mr. Ousseini Maïga, the environmental manager of the Essakane mine, Mr. Steve Somda, and Professor Alkassoum Maïga, led a panel on environmental education, citizen participation, sustainable development and mining.
