Cooperation: The Minister of External Affairs discusses the repatriation of 400 Burkinabè migrants with the head of the IOM mission


Ouagadougou: The Minister of Foreign Affairs for regional cooperation and Burkinabè Abroad, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, received on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 in Ouagadougou, the Head of Mission of the International Organization for Migration in Burkina Faso, Aissatou Guissé Kaspar. They discussed the repatriation of 400 Burkinabè migrants.

According to the Head of the IOM Mission in Burkina Faso, for this month of January alone, more than 400 migrants were repatriated to Burkina.

‘The meeting with the head of Burkinabe diplomacy was an opportunity to discuss aspects related to the return of migrants to the fold and the challenges linked to their integration,’ indicated Aissatou Guissé Kaspar who wishes to have another framework discussions with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , to address the issue in detail.

For his part, the head of Burkinabe diplomacy recognized that the migration issue is worrying, especially since the migrants are mainly young people.

According to him, the figures presented by the IO
M are figures that are of concern, because they are increasingly higher. He adds that the profile of those who fuel the migratory flow is a profile that can be managed to make it a potential for development, at the risk that terrorist groups become interested in it.

In the meantime, Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré welcomed the IOM’s commitment to supporting migrants wishing to return to the motherland, and reassured Ms. Aissatou Guissé Gaspar of the government’s availability to strengthen collaboration with the IOM, for more results in the management of migrants in Burkina Faso.

At this audience, the IOM Head of Mission also presented the vision of the new Director General of the organization, who wishes during her mandate to work to strengthen regular migratory routes, with the aim of deconstructing the negative narrative. used to talk about ‘irregular’ immigration.

A vision shared by Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, at a time when other waves of Burkinabè migrants are expected in the coming days, from cou
ntries such as Algeria, Libya, Tunisia and Chad.
