Ouagadougou, The coach of the Stallions of Burkina Faso Hubert Vélud reacted Friday from Malabo (Equatorial Guinea) that his team will not underestimate any opponent, in relation to the draw for CAN 2023 carried out Thursday evening in Abidjan and placing Burkina Faso in Group D with Algeria, Mauritania and Angola.

“We have our chance in this group. The chance exists and it is up to us to take it. But we are not going to underestimate any team. That’s for sure. We will sixteen our chance while taking into account the forces present,” declared Etalons coach Hubert Vélud.

He also recognized that “it is a group where there is a natural favorite which is Algeria”, reassuring that “it will be a homogeneous group”.

The thought leader of the Burkina Faso pennant team, said that in this group D, “we are slightly favorite, but it will be a very competitive and very homogeneous group”.

The last match between Burkina Faso and Algeria played in 2021 during the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup Africa zone saw the two teams separate back to back (2-2). Against the Mourabitounes of Mauritania, the Stallions also tied the game (0-0) in a friendly in the United Arab Emirates in December 2021.

It was the Palancas Négras of Angola who managed to win against Burkina Faso (2-1) during the qualifying match for CAN 2019 where the Stallions did not qualify.

The Stallions played Friday evening in a friendly against Equatorial Guinea in Malabo (0-0), counting for the FIFA day for the preparations for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the final phase of the CAN 2023. Another test match in the same setting is planned for October 17 in Casablanca (Morocco) against Mauritania.

For the final phase of CAN 2023, Burkina Faso is housed in Pool D in Bouaké and will play its first match against Mauritania on January 16 (2 pm).
