Burkina/Terrorism: More than 340,000 IDPs have returned home

343,383 people who fled terrorist violence returned to their homes as of November 30, 2023, the Minister in charge of Humanitarian Action, Nandy Somé, announced on Friday. ‘As of November 30, 2023, 343,383 people have returned to their places of origin,’ declared the Minister in charge of Humanitarian Action, Nandy Somé, according to comments reported by the public daily Sidwaya in its Monday publication. The minister spoke on Friday December 15, 2023 in Ouagadougou during the 16th session of the National Council for Emergency Relief and Rehabilitation (CONASUR). The meeting was under the theme: ‘What innovative strategies for sustainable resilience of returned, integrated or resettled internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities’. During the session, participants discussed the national strategy for the recovery of IDPs and host communities for the period 2023-2027, as well as the challenges and prospects for crisis prevention and management. The acting resident coordinator of the United Nations system in Burkina, Alain Akpadji, called on partners to act, because according to him, only 52% of needs are covered by available resources. He nevertheless notes that they managed to reach 36 difficulty-to-access locations thanks to government support. As a reminder, Burkina Faso has been facing terrorist attacks for eight years which have caused the loss of several hundred people, the displacement of 1.7 million others and the closure of thousands of schools and health centers. Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who took office on September 30, 2022, launched a general mobilization against terrorists which is starting to achieve tangible results
