Burkina subsidizes 2,300 tonnes of seeds for its 2024 fodder production campaign

Ouagadougou: The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal and Fisheries Resources officially launched the fodder production campaign for 2024, yesterday Thursday in Manga and announced the provision to producers of 2,300 tonnes of seeds for this campaign.

The Secretary General of the Center-South region, Ouo Abibata Bamouni/Traoré and the Chief of Staff of the Minister Delegate in charge of Animal Resources, Amadou Diallo chaired the official ceremony launching the fodder campaign in the capital of the Center region -South.

On the occasion, the ministry announced the provision to producers ‘at subsidized cost’ of 2,300 tonnes of fodder seeds, 8,553 tonnes of agro-industrial by-products, 75 kits of equipment for the valorization of agricultural by-products, 160 fodder production equipment kits and 1000 hayloft construction kits.

Livestock breeding is an important sub-sector for Burkina Faso. It contributes more than 18% to the national GDP and is practiced by more than 80% of the population.

To support this sub-sec
tor, the government is working to popularize good practices in fodder production and fodder conservation, to help breeders cope with shortages of livestock feed in the dry season.

The fodder availability for the 2023-2024 campaign is estimated at 13,522,026 tonnes of dry matter (DMS), i.e. 76% coverage for a requirement of 17,826,157 tonnes of dry matter.
