Ouagadougou: The president of the Co-Development, Violence against women and girls (VFF) group, Giselle Dabré, affirmed Tuesday that her structure has raised awareness among more than 182,000 people about VAW and the participation of women in political actions.
‘182,488 direct people and 631,889 indirect people were affected in our various activities against women and girls regarding the violence they suffer,’ said Giselle Dabré on Tuesday June 24, 2024 in Ouagadougou.
She was speaking at a press conference on the results of the work of co-development groups on the rights of women and girls. According to President Dabré, 79% of those affected are women and young girls.
Concerning violence against women and girls, Ms. Dabré asserted that with the security crisis, there is more violence against women and children. In his opinion, thousands of internally displaced people, especially women, have revealed that they have been victims of gender-based violence.
According to Giselle Dabré, this crisis has negative
ly impacted the work of the groups, given that activities have been relocated and that it was necessary to collaborate with the defense and security forces to ensure their proper performance.
Concerning the law on the gender quota, Ms. Dabré estimated that the participation rate of women in politics or decision-making spheres remains to be improved. As an illustration, from 2020 to 2024, the number of women in the National Assembly is around 10 to 20% of deputies, she detailed.
The monitoring-evaluation manager of the Co-Development group, Women’s political participation, Rawidwendé Jérémie Compaoré, declared that the co-development groups were created to strengthen the capacities of women’s rights organizations through the identification of promising strategies.
To this end, the two groups each benefited from 4 million CFA francs for the implementation of these activities, started in July 2022, he maintained.
He specified that the groups carried out joint workshops and a mapping of the actors intervening
on violence against women and girls and their political participation.
These actions, added Mr. Compaoré, were carried out in conjunction with 72 associations and organizations defending the rights of women and girls.
According to him, the work of co-development groups on the rights of women and girls benefits from financial support from the NGO Oxfam.
Under the terms of the partnership, the project officially ended on June 20, but the NGO will continue to support the actors through other projects, concluded Compaoré Rawidwendé Jérémie.
