Burkina is considering climate-smart agriculture in a vast five-year agricultural program of 120.89 billion FCFA

Ouagadougou: The Burkinabè government has just adopted a major five-year agricultural program costing 120,893,950,000 FCFA including climate-smart agriculture, intensification of rice production, wheat and market gardening as well as the mobilization of the army to await food security.

This vast program adopted yesterday Wednesday by the Council of Ministers under the name of Presidential Initiative for Agricultural Production and Food Self-Sufficiency (IP-P3A) is subdivided into 4 components.

The first component aims to establish climate-smart agriculture on 5,000 ha, linked to the adaptation and mitigation of climate change.

The second component, called ‘Emergency Initiative for the Intensification of Production rice, wheat and market garden products in Burkina Faso’, will be implemented on 16,000 ha.

The third component is called the Burkina Faso Military Food Program (PAMBF) and will cover agricultural areas of 6,750 ha.

Finally, the fourth component or Production Program for the Defense of the Homel
and against Food Insecurity (PDPIA) will occupy 5,000 ha, with 3,500 ha expected from the Comoé Sugar Company and surrounding villages, for what is said to be ‘a production with the VDPs and the various cooperatives and 1,500 ha of production with the National Chamber of Agriculture.

‘This presidential initiative (…) also aims to ensure food security as well as the well-being of farmers in Burkina Faso,’ justified the government.

The active forces of Burkina Faso have granted a 5-year mandate from July 2024 to Captain Ibrahim Traoré to lead the Transition and the various reforms for the fight against terrorism, the rebuilding of the State and good governance among others.
