Seven major US unions demanded that US President Joe Biden refuse any additional military support to the Israeli army, because of which “a very large number of Palestinian civilians, including many children, continue to die under American bombs” in the Gaza Strip. This is stated in a letter addressed to the American leader.

‘Mr. President, the time has come to take decisive action to end this war. Ending U.S. military assistance to Israel is the quickest and most reliable way to achieve this,’ the text reads.

The unionists believe that “it is necessary to immediately cease the transfer of American military assistance to the Israeli government to peacefully resolve this conflict”, and that “the growing tensions in the region threaten to involve even more innocent civilians in the large-scale war, the humanitarian crisis worsens every day: famine, massive displacements [of the population], destruction of critical infrastructure, notably schools and hospitals.’

The letter to Mr. Biden emphasizes that neither
Israel nor the radical Palestinian movement Hamas accepted the ceasefire agreement, proposed in May by the current Washington administration, in the Palestinian enclave, and that the Prime Minister of the Hebrew State Benjamin Netanyahu and members of his government ‘publicly rejected key elements of the agreement’.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the details of the US ceasefire plan in Gaza

The situation in the Middle East sharply worsened after the infiltration of armed fighters of the radical Palestinian movement Hamas from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory on October 7, 2023, accompanied by the killing of residents of border localities and the capture of more than 240 hostages. Israel announced a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip and began striking it, as well as parts of Lebanon and Syria, after which it launched a ground operation in the enclave, following which at present 39,000 Palestinians died and 90,100 were injured. 70% of them are women and children.

On May 31, United States Preside
nt Joe Biden announced the terms of a new three-stage draft peace agreement, designed for six weeks and providing for a complete ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from civilian areas of Gaza and the release of hostages held by the Hamas movement in exchange for the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

Benjamin Netanyahu had declared that he supported this plan and that all the obstacles to reaching an agreement, according to him, were created by Hamas. At the same time, the prime minister repeatedly stressed that Israel would continue its military pressure on Palestinian radicals in the Gaza Strip, because, according to him, this would bring closer the conclusion of an agreement on the release of the hostages.
