23 years ago, 2,977 people died in the horrific attacks of September 11.

The September 11, 2001 attacks perpetrated against the United States by terrorists from the Al Qaeda network caused 2,977 deaths, including 343 firefighters, 60 police officers and some 9,291 injured, according to the official report.

The attacks took place between 8am and 10am on 11th September 2001 and were carried out by 19 men sent by the network led by Osama Bin Laden. They managed to hijack three airliners and crash them into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon. A fourth hijacked plane over Washington crashed without reaching its target but killing all those on board.

The twin attacks on the Twin Towers alone killed 2,753 people, including 343 firefighters and 60 police officers who responded to rescue the first victims.

Of the 2,977 victims of the attacks, 310 were foreign nationals, including 67 British, 41 Indian, 28 South Korean, 24 Canadian, 24 Japanese, four French and one Belgian. The youngest victim was 2 years old and the oldest was 85.

The link between these terrori
st attacks and the Al Qaeda network was established by a national commission of inquiry set up a year later, even though Bin Laden and his companions were already rejoicing in several videos about having inflicted damage on the United States.

On the evening and the day after September 11, several countries strongly condemned these attacks, including Russia, China and France.

“The event that happened in the United States today goes beyond national borders. It is a brazen challenge to all of humanity, at least to civilized humanity. And what happened today is further proof of the relevance of the Russian proposal to pool the efforts of the international community in the fight against terrorism, this scourge of the 21st century,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

These attacks led America and its allies to wage a total war against terrorism, going as far as the invasion of Afghanistan and the destruction of Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq.

23 years later, terrorism no longer mobilizes the international
community as much and the United States is worried by other concerns than international terrorism, which has moved in particular to the Sahel.
